For just a single user (or small workgroup that won't use the DB simultaneously) I'd suggest Microsoft Access.

OpenOffice.org has a free one called Base, but I haven't used it so I couldn't tell you how easy it is to use (but it's free so it wouldn't hurt to try): http://www.openoffice.org/product/base.html

Of course, you already have Excel, so there's a good chance you already have Access.

Minor correction for you as well... Excel isn't a database. It's a spreadsheet. Check out the source links for more info.
References :
http://dlthede.net/Informatics/Chap16/DatabaseSpreadsheet.htm

what software should i use to build a auto body part search<?
I have a database of all the items i carry in excel spreadsheet. Its broken down in to year1-year2, make, model, part description, extended discription, and partnumber. I would like to make this into a drop down menu with the first option being year, then make, then, model, then description. would be a good example
